Registered designations in the food sector: an overview

Indicating the origin of agricultural products or foodstuffs is not free of obligations. EU-legislation provides for a number of registered designations for farmers, producers, and processors to protect the name of ‘their’ region against producers misleadingly representing their products as regional products.

Dominique Devos and Jonas Van Orshoven describe the different types of registered designations and the recognition procedure that has to be followed for designations to obtain such protection in the second edition of the Food Science and Law Magazine.
